What Is CHAS and who needs it?
The Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS) is a health and safety accreditation scheme for the construction industry. The purpose of CHAS is to help both buyers and suppliers in the assessment of health and safety competence.
CHAS acts as a pre-qualification during construction industry tenders. Some buyers make CHAS accreditation compulsory before they will accept a tender. This is very common in the procurement process for public organisations.
CHAS is favoured by buyers as it saves them the time of assessing a contractor’s health and safety competence themselves.
Contractors & Sub-Contractors.
As a contractor, achieving CHAS accreditation reduces the time spent on demonstrating health and safety compliance for every tender you apply for. In some cases, failure to be CHAS registered may mean missing out on the chance to tender at all.
If you’re a sub-contractor working for a main contractor, CHAS accreditation is being asked for increasingly to allow you to work with the main contractor.
CHAS also has specific question sets for different types of contractors, such as designers, CDM professionals, construction or other industry suppliers.
